About Devany

I am an Arizona-born oil painter, receiving my BFA in 2021 from Northern Arizona University, majoring in Studio Art Major and minoring in Psychology. I’ve since been driven by a pull toward painting as a necessary form of self-expression, record, and revolution. Within art history, I’ve always found painting to be both a traditional discipline and a radical tool - capable of holding intimate experiences while speaking to broader social and political upheaval.

Hands appear throughout my portfolio as a through-line, an expressive vocabulary of their own. Their gestures carry a universal fluency: joy, rage, sorrow, seduction, tension. Through their dexterity and nuance, I aim to pull viewers inward and have them leave thinking either, “I didn’t know that’s what it’s like,” or, “Me, too.”

My work also explores my relationship with my body and sexuality which, as a queer woman, has been complex - a tension I know is shared by many in my community. From the first time my friends and I were catcalled in year six by a group of university students, I became acutely aware of the space I inhabit, and of how others may try to claim or redefine it. That early awareness continues to shape the work I create. My paintings operate as a platform to communicate and process these anxieties, using graphic and symbolic imagery to explore the relationships between people, their bodies, their governments, and their gods.

I’ve recently moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a master’s degree in art therapy, deepening my understanding of art as a means of communication, healing, and reclamation. This transition has woven itself into my practice, reinforcing my belief in the transformative power of imagery - how it can hold trauma, challenge systems, and create communal resonance. My work, both in the studio and in my therapeutic studies, continues to explore how art can help us navigate the trials of embodiment, identity, and the spaces we are forced - or choose - to occupy.
